How It Works
Each generic Fioricet contains 3 main components which are acetaminophen (300mg), butalbital (50mg), and caffeine (40mg).
Acetaminophen (300mg) –
Acetaminophen is an analgesic that works as a pain reliever and fever reducer. It prevents certain chemical production in the brain and stops the pain signal reach your brain. Thus it helps you to feel much less or no pain before the headache even starts.
Butalbital (50mg) –
Butalbital works on the central nervous system. It accelerates the production of certain chemicals in the brain that let you relax. It mimics the effects of a sedative that calms your nerves so that you don’t feel the pain at all.
Caffeine (40mg) –
Caffeine accelerates the function of acetaminophen. It is an adenosine antagonist that suggests that it impairs the function of adenosine, a naturally produced chemical in the body for complete pain relief.
Important Considerations
It takes Fioricet at least 30-60 minutes to kick in. It works best when you take the medicine as soon as you encounter the very first sign of an upcoming headache. The medicine will not be that effective if you take it when the headache is in full swing.
Fioricet is a powerful pain reliever for tension headaches. So, maintaining the right dosage is highly crucial. You should not take more than 1-2 tablets at a time or else, there will be a chance of overdosing.
One of the main components of Fioricet is butalbital. And, it is considered a habit-forming component. So, taking Fioricet every day is not recommended at all. If you feel the need to take the medicine almost every day, you should consult your doctor for the right dosage division, so that you don’t form the habit.
